All sex offenders in the state of New York are required to register.  A sex offender is defined as anyone who is convicted of a sex offense or a sexually violent offense.  A sex offense is defined as a conviction or an attempt to commit:

• Sexual misconduct
• Rape in the second or third degree
• Sodomy in the second or third degree
• Sexual abuse in the second degree
• Incest
• Sexual performance by a minor
• Unlawful imprisonment in the first or second degree in which the the victim is under 17 and the offender is not their parent.
• Promoting prostitution in the second degree if the offender advances or profits from the person under 16.
• Promoting prostitution in the first degree
• Conviction of or a conviction for an attempt to disseminate indecent materials to minors in the first degree.
• Conviction of or a conviction for an attempt to commit an offense listed above as a hate crime or terrorist crime.
• Forcible touching, provided the victim is under 18
• Sexual abuse in the third degree, victim is under 18
• Sex offense
• Sexually violent offense
• Forcible touching or sexual abuse in the third degree or attempt of these offenses.
• A re-offense of forcible touching or sexual abuse, regardless of the age of the victim.
• Felony in another jurisdiction that includes any of the crimes above.
• Sexual exploitation of a minor
• Selling or buying a minor
• Certain activities relating to material that involves the sexual exploitation of minors
• Certain activities relating to material constituting or containing child pornography
• Production of sexually explicit depictions of a minor for importation into the United States.
