| The Louisiana legislature enacted the state's first sex offender law in 1992. The law required registration of persons who had been convicted of sex crimes and crimes against minor victims. The registration was handled by local law enforcement agencies. The sheriff's offices and police departments received the information from the sex offender and forwarded the offender's fingerprints and information to the Department of Public Safety and Corrections. In 1997, the Legislature amended the state's sex offender laws to conform with the Wetterling Act, Megan's Law and the Pam Lyncher Act. Additional registration requirements were amended as well. | ||||||

Police Any adult in Louisiana who has pled guilty or who has been convicted of any sex offense. This applies to juveniles who have pled guilty of or have been convicted of a sex offense must register as well. Sex offenders include child predators and sexually violent predators as well. A child predator is a person who has been convicted of a criminal offense against a minor. A sexually violent predator is a person who has been convicted of a sex offense and has a mental and personality abnormality that causes them to engage in these sexually violent offenses. An offender is required to register within 21 days after conviction or release from confinement. An offender is required to register with the sheriff of the parish he or she will be living in or does live in. If an offender resides in a parish with a population in excess of 450,000, he or she must register with the police department in their city. Registrants are required to provide the following:
