California Megan's Law is a website that has been set up by the California Department of Justice.  The site lists designated registered sex offenders who reside in California.  The site provides access to information on more than 63,000 registered sex offenders in California.  The state provides specific home addresses to more than 35,000 California sex offenders located in various California communities.  The site is available in 13 different languages to assist in ensuring that the citizens of California are alerted to the possibility of sex offenders living nearby them.

Individuals who are required to register in California:

Any person who has been convicted in any court in California, as well as federal or military courts since July 1, 1944.

Crimes that require a person to register include:

  • Kidnapping to commit rape, sodomy, lewd or lascivious acts or oral copulation, regardless of whether or not hte offender demanded a ransom.
  • Assault to commit rape, sodomy or oral copulation.
  • Sexual battery
  • Rape
  • Rape when a victim is unable to give consent.
  • Rape by force, fear or with force or violence.
  • Rape with threat of retaliation
  • Rape with a drugged victim
  • Rape of a victim unconscious of the nature of the act
  • Rape of a spouse by force or violence for which the offender is sentenced to the state prison.
  • Enticing a minor female for prostitution.
  • Induced intercourse or sex acts by false representation with the intent to create fear.
  • Prostitution where the victim is a minor and the offense is committed after January 1, 1998.
  • Procurement of a minor under 16 for lascivious and lewd acts.
  • Abduction of a minor for prostitution.
  • Aggravated sexual assault of a minor.
  • Incest
  • Sodomy
  • Lewd or lascivious acts or conduct.
  • Oral copulation
  • Continuous sexual abuse of a minor
  • Sexual penetration of a person with a foreign object.
  • Distributing obscene matter depicting minors engaging in or simulating sexual conduct
  • Distributing, exhibiting or exchanging obscene matter with a minor involved in or simulating sexual conduct.
  • Annoying or molesting a minor under 18
  • Soliciting another to commit rape, sodomy or oral copulation by force or violence.
  • Indecent exposure or assisting in indecent exposure.
  • Sending harmful matter to a minor over the phone, email, the Internet or another commercial online service, as long as the offense is a felony.

Juvenile offenders who were discharged or paroled from the Department of Youth Authority to another custody they were committed to or after being adjudicated a ward of the juvenile court must register if guilty of a sexual offense.
