| The South Carolina Public Records Act was signed on June 11, 1990 by Governor Carroll A. Campbell. The law took effect in 1973 and increased the penalty for destroying, defacing or removing a public records. Since this time, the number of public records available in the state have increased dramatically and has caused a greater need for the preservation of public records. These South Carolina public records may include jail records, court records, criminal records, incarceration records and more.
